Sarvangasana - The Queen of Asanas

The shoulderstand – Sarvangasana – is known as the the queen of all postures, as its benefits are numerous:
  • increases strength and flexibility of the upper body, legs and abdomen. It opens the chest and stretches the neck, shoulders and upper back muscles.
  • aids in restful sleep – promotes deep sleep and can help relieve insomnia.
  • strengthens the heart and respiratory system.
  • aids digestion.
  • improves bowel movements and reduces constipation – change in gravitational pull on the body affects the abdominal organs so that the bowels move freely and constipation is relieved.
  • has a calming effect, as it soothes the parasympathetic nervous system.  If you are easily irritated, upset or prone to anger, you will find it easier to stay calm rather than react to life’s ups and downs.
  • helps calm a headache by improving blood circulation to the brain.
  • helps with weight management, by increasing metabolism. It balances hormones and improves functioning of the thyroid and parathyroid glands.
  • alleviates hypertension.
  • relieves breathlessness and palpitations.
  • combats the common cold – eradicates common colds and sinus blockages.
  • alleviates asthma, bronchitis and throat ailments.
  • improves skin complexion and reduces wrinkles, by increasing the blood flow to the face.
  • decreases varicose veins by assisting in draining old blood from the legs, pelvis and abdominal area.
  • helps to treat hemorrhoids and hernias.
  • good for the ovaries and uterus, including helping treat ovarian cysts, prolapsed uterus, reducing uterine fibroids, reducing menstrual cramps and regulating menstrual flow
  • alleviates urinary disorders.
  • stimulates the Visuddha (throad chakra) – ignites the fifth chakra which is associated with creativity and self-expression.
If you are unable to do the shoulderstand, Viparita Karani (legs up against the wall) is a good alternative.  Do not practice shoulderstand if you have:
  • untreated high blood pressure
  • detached retina
  • glaucoma
  • hernia
  • cardiovascular disease
  • cervical spondylitis
  • slipped discs
  • neck injury
